Plants: Tulipa (Darwin hybrid) 'Blushing apeldoorn' - tulip

Darwin hybrids were created by crossing formerly wild species of tulip from Central Asia (tulipa fosteriana). The result being huge flowers with almost regular pyramid shape before they open, brilliant colours, and tall, sturdy stems – excellent for cutting. Moreover, they can stand a little neglect if you leave them in the ground for a few years. That on the proviso you do not cut off the leaves before they wither.

Tulips grow in fertile, well-drained soil, in full sun or part-shade. For best performance it is recommended to dig their bulbs out from the garden bed every year after the leaves wither. Store them in a dry, dark and cool place until October/November (before frosts) which is the best time for planting them again. You will gain the best colour and flower size if you find them a different location every year. When cutting the flowers always clean the knife before you use it on another variety. Distance between individual bulbs: 12 cm; planting depth: 10 cm; always tips upwards. Fully hardy.

´Blushing Apeldoorn´ is another Darwin hybrid with prolonged blooming period. Its colour is rich to vanilla yellow with a really delicate blush in apricot orange shades. It has a long and sturdy stem which makes it quite resistant to wind.
