Actaea Racemosa - Black Cohosh

Fairy Candles, Black Cohosh, Bugbane - Actaea Racemosa
This North American native originates from the eastern part of the US. It is no great surprise that is has been honored with the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit as the elongated bottle-brush spires borne on tall stems in late summer make for an unforgettable sight.

Minute white flowers are densely arranged on inflorescence up to 24 inches long, but the true beauty is created by the pronounced stamens which glisten when light cascades over them. Blooms last about 4 weeks and the spent flower spires continue to be decorative for at least that long. Large, medium green leaves are ternately compound with sharply toothed ovate leaflets. Plants are rhizomatous and are effective for filling large expanses of humus-rich, moist shade.
